When more traditional attempts at weight loss have not resulted in long-term success, many people struggling with obesity turn to bariatric surgery, or weight-loss surgery, as an option.
Bariatric surgery is a way to change the amount of food your stomach can hold and/or the way your body absorbs calories and nutrition, resulting in weight loss. There are a number of different ways to perform the surgery, based on each patient’s unique needs and situation. Almost all procedures are done laparoscopically, a technique that minimizes incision size and reduces recovery time and discomfort.
At our Hospital, our surgeons have performed thousands of procedures and work with a team of healthcare professionals to support you along your weight loss journey, from deciding to have surgery, preparing for surgery and adjusting to a new way of life and health after surgery.
During this procedure, a small stomach pouch or sleeve is created to decrease the amount of food it can hold. This surgery does not involve the small intestine in any way. The procedure, performed under general anesthesia, takes between one and two hours, with an expected hospital stay of two to three days.
The purpose of the operation is to drastically decrease the amount of food eaten without causing hunger. Appetite is dramatically controlled by the restrictive effect of the new stomach, leading to an early feeling of fullness.
Ideal is a really strong word. But at Oasis Hospital we really believe that you can reach your goals. If your overweight or your BMI is above a 30 BMI or 30% body fat, you are a candidate.
At Oasis Hospital we strive for life changing weight loss. This is only achieved by preparing for surgery and then through nutritional supplementation, and by designing a diet that can compensate for the malnourishment we have subjected our bodies for a long time. Weight loss surgery should not be taken lightly. It should be a well thought out and planned decision that includes looking at all possible outcomes and selecting the best options for preparation, execution and follow up.
